Physical Requirements

All applicants are required to pass a job-related fitness test administered by Departmental Personnel.

Scope Of Fitness Testing

  • Applicants must complete 29 sit-ups within 1 minute.
  • Male applicants must complete a minimum of 20 push-ups within 1 minute.
  • Female applicants must complete a minimum of 10 push-ups within 1 minute.
  • Flexibility: Applicants must be able to sit and reach 16.5 inches.
  • Bench Press: Applicants must bench press 64% of their body weight at least one time.
  • 1.5 mile run: Applicants must complete the 1.5 mile run within 16:28 minutes.
  • Glock familiarization; Police Officer Trainee Applicants must have the ability to control and dry fire a departmental .40 caliber Glock Pistol. Police Officer Trainee Applicants must demonstrate the ability to charge the pistol with their strong hand and weak hand. Applicants must be able to release the magazine from the pistol using both strong hand and weak hand.
  • Applicants must have 20/40 one eye 20/100 other eye, corrected to 20/20 in both eyes with glasses, with 75% depth perception. Applicants must have the ability to recognize basic colors. Contact lenses must be removed for a minimum of 24 hours before eyes are tested without lenses.

Police Cadet program

The Police Cadet program is designed for 18-20 year old applicants who are interested in pursuing a career in Law Enforcement.

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) offers cadets a variety of rewarding assignments and affords the opportunity to gain valuable law enforcement skills. Cadets also attend the local community college taking law enforcement courses on a part-time basis, paid for by BPD. The cadet program provides valuable and rewarding law enforcement experience and prepares the younger applicants for future success in the BPD academy.
