Five families and ten children were saved as a result of the bravery and teamwork of four BPD officers.
On May 21, at 12:55 A.M., Officers Ray Montgomery and Tamika Washington were patrolling their post in the Southern District when they were flagged down by a distraught citizen who alerted them to a large fire in the 1900 block of Christian Street. As they entered the block, they encountered thick smoke, limiting their visibility.
Finding dozens of frantic people in the block, they radioed for backup units to respond in order to help minimize the chaos. Officers Rene Gutierrez and Dorian Salmon arrived and quickly helped ease the rising tension.
With thick smoke pouring from many of the homes, the four officers proceeded to knock on doors and helped families get to safety. The officers aided the elderly and carried babies out of what turned into a five-alarm fire that destroyed half of the 1900 block of Christian Street. One father said "We didn't even know the house was on fire, all of us were asleep and the house was filled with smoke."
