Over the course of the last week or so, a few downtown Baltimore area hotels have had guests contacted by scammers who attempted to elicit credit card information.Over the phone, they acted under the pretense of being a hotel "Night Auditor" who was double-checking their credit card information on their reservation, discovered an error and was offering a 30% discount on the room rate and a complimentary lunch for the inconvenience. To correct the mistake, the caller then requested credit card information. The calls were made very late at night or in the early morning hours and guests reported the voices as male and female, sounding african-american. The male voice may have had a southern accent.
While not yet a issue of considerable size, the Baltimore Police Department would nonetheless like to remind everyone to be aware of the high-potential for scams when providing credit card information over the phone and to remember, never give your credit card account number out over the phone unless you initiated the call.
