Western District Murder Arrest

On Feb. 8, 2024, detectives arrested 27-year-old Dayrel McFarland.

Detectives believe that McFarland killed 37-year-old Jamal Barney on Oct. 2, 2023, in the 500 block of North Payson Street.

McFarland was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with 1st-degree murder.

Western District Homicide Investigation

On Oct. 2, 2023, at approximately 4:36 p.m., Western District patrol officers responded to a vacant home in the 500 block of North Payson Street, in reference to a call to check the well-being.

Once there, officers spoke with the caller who stated her loved one had been reported missing on Oct. 1, 2023, and is possibly inside of the location.

Officers gained entry into the dwelling and located the victim, obviously deceased, with signs of trauma to the body.
The victim's remains were transported to the Medical Examiner's office where the victim was identified as Jamal Barney (B/M, 9/24/1986).

On Oct. 3, 2023, the victim's death was ruled a homicide.
