District Information

Northwestern

The Northwestern District has a diverse makeup of communities such as Hanlon-Longwood, Cross Country and Mount Washington. The Northwestern District is home to the world-famous Pimlico Race Course, the second oldest race track in the nation and host to the second leg of the Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes. Pimlico has played host to racing icons such as Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Secretariat, and the 2015 Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah. Sinai Hospital is also in this District.

 

Major Keira Saunders

Major Keira Saunders

Major Keira Saunders has been appointed as the District Commander of the Northwestern District. Born in Fall River, Mass., she was raised in Laurel and has been a member of the Baltimore Police Department for more than 22 years. Her previous assignments include the Northern District, Southeastern District, Southwestern District, Northwestern District, Northeastern District, Organized Crime Division, Special Enforcement Team and the Education & Training Section. She served as the Executive Officer of the Northern District and was most recently assigned to the Compliance Bureau under the Professional Standards Section. She also was a member of the BPD Honor Guard.

She earned an Associate's Degree from Howard Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Baltimore, and a Master's Degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University. She holds a certificate in criminal justice leadership from the University of Maryland University College. She is also a graduate of PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) Session 81. Major Saunders is a Baltimore City resident.

Captain Kurt Yourkovik

Captain Kurt Yourkovik

Captain Kurt Yourkovik has been appointed Executive Officer of the Northwest District. Captain Yourkovik was born in Baltimore and lived in the Baltimore region. He has also lived in Hawaii and San Antonio. He graduated from North County High School in Anne Arundel County in 2005.

He has been a member of the Baltimore Police Department for 13 years. Captain Yourkovik began his career as a Patrol officer in the Western and Southern Districts. He was promoted to sergeant, where he spent most of his time in the Western District. Captain Yourkovik briefly spent time as a Mobile Metro Unit (MMU) sergeant before being promoted to Lieutenant, where he was a Shift Commander in the Northwest District. Most recently, he was assigned to the Patrol Division as the administrative Lieutenant.

During his career, he has received the Life Saving Award for saving another officer’s life, along with several other awards and accommodations from the Baltimore Police Department.
